Review: MyGlam (now IPSY)

Today I received my first package from MyGlam (now IPSY). I have to admit that I was kind of confused when I saw a package from IPSY, since I just recently signed up for MyGlam.

The Packaging. The products arrived in a bright pink padded enveloped. Very cute. I plan to re-use the envelop (those retail for about $3.50), so, I was already excited.  I was surprised that the package did not have tissue inside, with a special seal stamp ( but I guess that's how they keep the price at $10/month).

The Products- VERY GOOD!! These are all products that I will use and they go every well with my complexion. I was surprise at the quality. I was soooo glad I signed up.

What did i get?

  • Coastal Scents Eye shadow
  • Be a Bombshell eye liner- Full size
  • Couture Colour Pequi Oil® Treatment ( I am trying this one tomorrow!!!)
  • Mirenesse Lip Bomb Glossy Lacquer Stain- Full size
  • TheBalm What's Your Type? "the body builder" Black Mascara

How to Throw a Swap Party

I have thinking about new ways to spend time with my friends. A swap party is a great idea, at least i think so. I was searching for Ideas and came up with this great article.
written by: Libby Kane

Pick a Theme

What kind of swap do you want to hold? We decided on an accessories swap to make it easier for people to try on the items in the office, but you could certainly organize a swap for clothing, or even for specific items of clothing, like shoes or dresses.
A dress swap might be particularly popular if you’re still in college. Our sales and marketing intern, Marjorie, points out that students may not bring enough accessories or clothing to school to have extra to trade, but they’d benefit from temporarily swapping dresses for formal events.
You can think outside the box, too: It doesn’t just need to be about clothing or accessories. “I think we could expand and do a housewares swap,” editorial intern Joyce suggests. “There are so many things lying around the house that you don’t know what to do with it.”

Set the Rules

Once you choose the theme of your swap party, decide on the rules. It might be best to set limits on how many pieces or what brands your guests can bring, says our creative director and project manager, Tiffany. That way, your swap is more like a consignment shop with a few high-quality designer pieces, rather than a free-for-all jumble.

Send Classy Invites

Now that you’ve got an idea of how you’ll organize your swap party, write up your invitations. Make sure you outline the rules clearly: As editorial assistant Gabrielle noted, not everyone knew they could bring shoes to our accessories swap. Include the time, place and a request for an RSVP.

Set the Mood (And the Room)

Set the tone with a fun, party atmosphere: String up holiday lights, play upbeat music and set out finger food. While we ordered in sandwiches and salads, it might be nice to serve cocktails for an evening swap party. Alden, one of our editorial assistants, advises that you make clear drinks, so they won’t stain the wares if they’re spilled. Set up the display as you collect the clothing and accessories. Also provide mirrors, so guests can see how they look.

Categorize the Items

“I think it was important to have all the different types of accessories separated out, so you could see everything,” says Marjorie. If you’re swapping accessories, group like kinds of jewelry together, and arrange them in a way that makes it easy for guests to pick them up and try them on. The same goes for clothing, but keep in mind that you’ll need more room to lay everything out. Coat racks, hooks and clothes hangers can help you capitalize on the space you have.

Keep it Anonymous

“It was nice that it was anonymous, so you didn’t feel self-conscious. Nobody would know if no one took your stuff,” says Joyce. To avoid that awkwardness, don’t label the items with the original owner.

Give it Structure

Editorial assistant Gabrielle suggested we have participants go in rounds. For the first round, we told everyone to choose two items. It made everyone think hard about what they really wanted, and kept it fair. (Our CEO Alexa was still in a meeting, so it also made sure it wasn’t completely picked over by the time she got there!) After one more round of two items each, we let everyone take whatever they wanted that was left over.

Share Your Finds

You can keep it anonymous while people are picking items, but after a couple rounds of choosing, pause and then encourage everyone to pick up their drinks and mingle. Guests then can share their finds and, if they want, reveal which items they donated. “It was fun to see what friends and colleagues wear—to see what their ‘alter egos’ are like,” says Ashley, an account executive.

Give the Leftovers to Goodwill

After the display has been picked over and the guests have gone home, round up what’s left and bring it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. All of the 20 participating ladies got several accessories, and we still ended up with a whole grocery bag full of items at the end of the swap!
Like product intern Emily says, our LearnVest accessory swap was a classic case of "one man's trash is another man's treasure." We got rid of some of the jewelry cluttering our drawers, and we’ve been sporting our new bracelets, necklaces and rings all week. We’d call that a success!
Check out the photos we took of our swap in the slideshow below. And if you’ve ever thrown a swap party—or you’re thinking about organizing one now—sound off in the comments.

Smokey Eye for a Night Out

To copy the bevy of celebs sporting smoldering, smoky eyes on the red carpet, stay away from blue hues - which can make you look like you have undereye circles, says Giorgio Armani makeup artist André Drykin. Instead, go for black, gray, brown or if you want "color," dark green shadows and liners. Then, follow these steps:

1. Apply a cream concealer over your eyelid to create a smooth base for your eyeshadow.

2. Use a pencil liner (black or gray looks best) to trace your top lashline from the inner corner to the outer. Then, use the same pencil to dot between your lower lashes. Smudge both lashlines with a cotton swab or an eyeliner brush.

3. Sweep powder shadow (brown, gray and dark green all work with black or gray liner) over your lid and into your crease, blending the color up and outward, says New York City makeup artist Morgen Schick DeMann.Marie Claire recommends: Morgen Stained Glass Eye Wash in Spruce; Shiseido The Makeup Eye Shadow Brush; Cover Girl Perfect Blend Pencil in Basic Black; Origins Full Story Lush-Lash Mascara in Black.

TIP: To prevent color from fading and give your lids a more shimmery finish, pat a cream shadow over the concealer on your lid first, wait five minutes, then top with a matching powder shadow.

4. Dust a lighter, neutral eyeshadow (such as ivory) over just your browbone.

5. Finish with two coats of black mascara.

8 Health Insurance Tips to Maximize Benefits for the Expectant and New Mom

8 Health Insurance Tips to Maximize Benefits for the Expectant and New Mom
By Amy Keohane, co-founder OffYourDesk.net

1. Coverage for your hospital stay. If your obstetrician is out-of-network, it’s your responsibility to pre-authorize your hospital stay before you check in. You can find the pre-authorization telephone number on your health insurance identification card, and you should call in the weeks prior to your expected delivery. If your obstetrician is in network, it’s his or her responsibility to make sure you’re pre-authorized.

2. Make sure to review the pre-admission packet that you’ll receive from the hospital or birthing center in the weeks before your expected delivery date. If necessary, contact your carrier to verify your coverage and benefits so you understand what your out-of-pocket expenses will be, if any.

3. Whether you’re utilizing an in-network or an out-of-network hospital or birthing facility, you should contact them prior to your anticipated delivery date and request an anesthesiologist (if necessary) that is in your network.

The services of an-out-of network anesthesiologist could result in significant out-of-pocket expenses, and you can’t assume your anesthesiologist will be in your network, even if you’re at an in-network facility.

4. Enrolling your baby in your plan. Many group health insurance plans (coordinated through employer) require that you enroll your baby in your health plan within 30 days of birth. Don’t wait until “things calm down” – make this call when you get home from the hospital. If your health insurance doesn't have your baby enrolled, your baby's medical claims will be denied. It is also extremely important that you notify your employer groupwhen your baby has arrived. Contact your employer’s Human Resource Department or your Benefits Administrator.

5. We recommend that you research and understand your plan’s coverage for your baby in the months before your expected delivery – knowing the details ahead of time will make the process easier once the baby has arrived. Consult the list of local pediatricians that are a part of the plan’s network so you can find a pediatrician that you like and trust. Check your plan to understand the types of services that your plan covers for babies and children. Does your plan cover immunizations? Well-baby visits? If yes, how many (not all insurance plans cover well-baby visits in the first 30 days)? How much are copayments and what is your deductible?
6. To avoid waiting on hold when you need to call your insurance carrier, Do NOT call between 10am – 2pm!  Best time to reach a live operator at most carriers is at 8am ET (except for Cigna – they have 24/7 live operators so you can also call them at night and there tends not to be a wait).
7. Be sure your provider gives you an itemized bill (ie, “ten allergy shots” vs. “allergy shots”) so you can confirm you’ve been reimbursed properly.
8. If you’re planning a summer vacation, check with your carrier to see if there are in-network doctors and/or hospitals near your destination – it can save you a lot of money if something were to happen.
